What is a hot dog made out of? You don't want to know. The above still shot is from Discovery Channel's How's It Made show, where they show the inside of a hot dog factory (we are unsure which manufacturer's facility this is). Within that slimy stuff is what's called "mechanically separated" turkey, chicken, pork, spices, and various chemicals like sodium phosphates, sodium acorbate, sodium diacetate, and sodium nitrate... yum! In terms of ORAC (antioxidant content) of a hot dog, the rating reflected above is quite low relative to fruits and vegetables. Beef hot dogs do contain more antioxidants, but that's kind of like saying a dime is worth more than a nickel. Are hot dogs good for you? We will let you be the judge of that!
