In 1996 the FDA approved Olestra as a zero calorie, fat-free food substitute for fat. It was most commonly used as chips with "WOW" branding on the bag in big letters. As is the case with many artificial ingredients, later on we realized what a disaster it was, winning a spot in Time Magazine's 50 Worst Inventions list of 2010 due to it interfering with the body's absorption of vitamins and nutrients and terrible gastrointestinal side effects like gas, bloating, and painful cramping. Twenty years later in 2016 it remained legal, but hardly anyone uses it anymore.
