What type of grape has the most resveratrol? It you compare the ORAC values of red vs. black vs. green grapes, they are 1837, 1746, and 1018, respectively. That means that red grapes - not black - actually have higher total antioxidants than black, albeit by a slight amount of merely 5%. But does this pattern also hold true for the specific antioxidant resveratrol and how much of it is in each kind of grape?

If you've been searching for the answer, you already know it's not easy to find. Almost every website which talks about resveratrol fails to provide any kind of concrete data as to what the numbers actually are. Instead they tell us generic statements like "a lot" of it, but that's not very helpful for people who take their nutrition seriously.

Red grapes have 0.15 to 0.78 mg total resveratrol per 100 grams of raw fruit (1). Unfortunately they don't tell us about other varieties and while you think this would be simple research to dig up, we spent nearly an hour reviewing medical research papers and clinical trials which address resveratrol content. Just about all of them focus on measuring wines, grape juices, seed extract, or skin extract. All of which are helpful, but do not provide an answer as to what the raw fruit yields. That being said, based on the evaluations of wines which use red vs. black grapes, the premise that fresh red grapes contain more trans resveratrol than fresh black appears to be most probable.
