Hass is the most widely sold variety of avocado in the United States. The "mother tree" which is responsible for all hass eaten today was planted in La Habra Heights, California in 1926. Named after its cultivator, Rudolph Hass, he patented the variety in 1935.

Every once of the fruit contains nearly 20 different vitamins and nutrients, including lutein and zeaxanthin which are thought to benefit the eye. The fatty acids are almost entirely Omega 6, with only a small amount of Omega 3 (ratio of 2.51 grams to 0.19 grams).
