Because of their intense sweetness, eating dates may seem like an unhealthy treat. The good news is that the glycemic index of dates is relatively low, at 42, thanks to its high amount of fiber. With an ORAC value that's not far behind blueberries, you're getting a fair amount of antioxidants. Perhaps the only downside of dates is that they are relatively high in calories because of their high sugar content (though it is absorbed much slower due to that fiber).
