Native to the Pacific Northwest of the United States, spanning north through Canada and Alaska, the Amelanchier alnifolia goes by many names; western juneberry, pigeon berry, saskatoon berry, Pacific serviceberry, western serviceberry, sarvisberry, alder-leaf shadbush, dwarf shadbush, and chuckley pear. That being said, they are most commonly referred to as serviceberries and saskatoon berries.

Thanks to its richness in anthocyanins, the antioxidant content of this fruit is impressive, exceeding that of wild blueberries, goji berries, and many others which are considered to be superfoods.
