A species native to the eastern side of North America, the black cohosh (Actaea racemosa, syn. Cimicifuga racemosa) has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy for various feminine issues. The Native Americans used it to relieve menstrual cramps and symptoms associated with menopause like hot flashes. In the U.S. it is only considered a dietary supplement (not a medication) but the German government approved it for these purposes almost a half century ago.

While the black cohosh flower is beautiful to look at, it is the root extract which demonstrates the apparent medical benefits. In addition to this supplement, there are numerous estrogen foods which many women find beneficial.

How much antioxidants there are in black cohosh root ranks it among the best superfoods. In fact, it's higher than many like acai fruit powder at 102,700, pure cocoa powder at 55,653 and maqui berry powder at 27,600. The food types with similar ORAC values to black cohosh will primarily be dried spices like turmeric, oregano, and cloves. Even though this root extract is a potent source of antioxidants, it would not be good for men to use given its higher phytoestrogen content.
