Even today (July 7, 2020), Efamol EPO is still being sold in Canada as a Natural Health Product “For the treatment of dry, itchy skin caused by Atopic Eczema (dermatitis).”

Please refer to the following Health Canada NHP Licenses:
NPN 80009582 at https://health-products.canada.ca/lnhpd-bdpsnh/info.do?licence=80009582
NPN 80009719 https://health-products.canada.ca/lnhpd-bdpsnh/info.do?licence=80009719

I am not disputing the dates you have indicated. Rather I am refuting the insinuation that Efamol EPO was ineffective for its licensed uses, and that the product commercialization was a failure; specifically, the following statements:

“To be clear, the high value of the company was not based on the relatively small amounts of revenue from supplement sales. Rather, it was the promise of prescription drugs which were being developed. Many made use of evening primrose extract. Ultimately, all of them failed.” How could licensed sale of EPO containing products for two different indications (i.e. atopic eczema and clinical mastalgia), in multiple countries for about a decade be considered ‘failed”?

“Their primrose oil was being sold in more than two dozen countries” Actually, at one time it was sold in about 40 countries.

“The FDA eventually had to block import of the oil and for good reason; it had not been proven using approved FDA trials to work for any of these things.” Actually, the import block was because the capsules contained evening primrose oil with added vitamin E (as an anti-oxidant) and new regulations that had come into effect in the US were only allowing importation of pure evening primrose oil (i.e. without the addition of vitamin E).

If there was a means or way to grow hair, most of these men would surely have a head full of heir.

Thanks for the comment Nancy. We reviewed the article and can’t find the date you are refuting. Could you please point it out? Perhaps you are confusing the patent dates we mention with the dates of pharmaceutical licenses.

In 1988, Scotia obtained their first pharmaceutical licence for Efamol Evening Primrose Oil, sold under the brand name Epogam as a prescription treatment for atopic eczema. That licence was obtained through the UK health authorities and similar licences were granted over the next few years years in Germany, Italy, Ireland, Denmark, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Korea, Greece, Hong Kong, Pakistan and Spain. Then in 1990 a licence for the use of Efamol EPO sold under the brand name Efamast was granted in the UK followed shortly thereafter by similar licences in Australia and two others countries.
